Pilot Projects

AVAN has created a workplan and architecture for a scalable prototype Library and Digital Repository Service.  The result of the 12-month project will be an operational Digital Repository Service, and a prototype Library that can be scaled up and further developed.

Specifically, the project will:

(1) develop an OAIS-compliant workflow for ingest for both access and preservation purposes;
(2) create a common “bibliographic” data record structure that can accommodate descriptive, shotlist, technical, preservation, and rights data, and capability to add time-based data for “deep indexing” at the clip-level;
(3) create a Trusted Digital Object for preservation, including creating an open archival MXF specification and tool to wrap an object’s essence file, its associated data, and related content such as transcripts, raw footage, and stills;
(4) build a prototype Library

While the AVAN Library accepts all kinds of content and subject areas, the prototype will focus on two content-based pilot projects: audio and moving image news content, and audiovisual documentation of the arts in Los Angeles.  Both projects will work with born-digital and analog-to-digital reformatted files.

Descriptions of the pilot projects and content partners can be found on the News Pilot Project and Arts in Los Angeles Pilot Project pages.
