| News Pilot Project | ||
News was selected as one of the pilot projects since aggregating similar types of non-fiction content will provide a better test for cross-collection searching in the Library. Ten content partners are providing up to 25 items each of varying content types, file formats, and metadata structures. Both born-digital and encoded files (“reborn” digital) will be tested since we have found that archives are predominately digitally reformatting analog magnetic media, resulting in the same file preservation, management, and access issues as managing born-digital produced content. “News” is broadly defined as news and public affairs broadcast programs and raw footage (TV and radio), and oral histories and interviews with newsmakers. Representative samples based on production type will be ingested: raw news content from both radio and TV, edited news programs (local and national), grass-roots news production, oral histories and interviews with newsmakers, etc. A range of essence file formats and metadata structures will be contributed, as well as content in METS and MXF wrappers. Pilot content partners are a mix of production organizations and university-based collections. Organizations have been requested to provide a few items that share subject content with other contributors so cross-collection searching by speech-to-text, visual and voice recognition, and mixed controlled vocabularies can be tested.
