“Simply collecting audiovisual archival materials is a worthless activity, unless it is accompanied by preservation, cataloging and access. As a film researcher, I’ve long dreamt of a central repository that both preserves and makes accessible to all, the audiovisual record of who we are – and who we were -- culturally, politically, and socially; the day-by-day recordings of our lives, our hopes and our dreams. While our government archives in Washington and the Internet Archive each contribute tremendously to this effort, there are always issues of copyright, geographical accessibility, or budget limitations on preservation and cataloging efforts. The AVAN project seems like an urgent, wonderful, and well-imagined first step in dealing with all of these issues – not only for public archives, such as government institutions, university collections and historical societies, but also for for-profit archives, such as broadcasting and media companies offering news, cultural, and entertainment content. It provides a unique plan that acknowledges the inconvenient truth that preservation technology changes fast, and seems always to be fragile. It offers a way out of many of the most difficult problems facing archives today, while providing a potentially monumental public service.”
-Kenn Rabin, Fulcrum Media Services

"With tens of thousands of tapes and discs, we have been struggling to figure out how to digitize our over 30 years of content.  AVAN offers a solution that is clear and standardized.  We are confident that with AVAN, our digitized content will remain accessible and viable for years to come.”
-David Sit, Vice President, The PBS NewsHour

"The Pacifica Radio Archives collection is fortunate to partner with the Audiovisual Archive Network to help make the collection more accessible to education and beyond.  Without partners like AVAN an extraordinary, yet relatively unknown, archive would most assuredly lose valuable recordings that could change the way history is told."
-Brian Glazer, Archives Director, Pacifica Radio Archives

"Digital preservation is much more that passive back-up and storage. AVAN understands this, and will provide a watchful, active digital preservation service that is important for video collections."
-Lynn Burnstan, Managing Director, University of California Television

“Not only will AVAN facilitate digital preservation and management of endangered collections through its Digital Repository Service, thus insuring the long-term availability of valuable media resources, it will also make possible widespread and easy access through an aggregated on-line library.AVAN’s easily accessible and searchable media library would greatly facilitate my research, teaching, and production work. Its digital preservation services will also greatly assist resource-poor archives preserve their media holdings for future generations to come.”
-Dr. Gerald Zahavi, Professor of History; Director, Documentary StudiesProgram, University at Albany
